Our Story

Irrecha is the Oromo people’s thanksgiving festival a celebration of nature, gratitude, and community. For generations, it has been a time to honour water, land, and the blessings of life. When Oromo families began settling in Australia, they carried this tradition with them, gathering each year to celebrate Irrecha in their new home.

What started as small community gatherings grew into vibrant festivals, bringing together elders, youth, and friends from across multicultural Australia. In 2020 Irrecha Australia was formally registered as a non‑profit organization to ensure this tradition would not only survive but thrive for generations to come.

Today, Irrecha Australia stands as a bridge between heritage and modern life  a place where Oromo culture is celebrated, shared, and honoured within Australia’s diverse society.
